Hi — I’m Referee JW
A parent who picked up a whistle, and somehow became (arguably) the toughest official in the Carolinas. You can yell. You can file reports. I’ll still call the game I believe the Laws intended.
How I call the game
I don’t referee like a fan
I’m USSF-registered and comfortable anywhere competitive — MLS NEXT, ECNL, ECNL RL, GA, GA Aspire, DPL, NPL, and high school through state playoffs.
I care about why a Law exists — not what the loudest parent wants to hear. If you think it “had to be a whistle” and I stay quiet… yes, I notice that look. Your frustration is free. So is my little smirk.

I never planned to referee. One Atlanta match — and one official who protected his pride instead of the game — pushed me to document what I saw, refuse to erase it, and promise I’d put on a badge myself if bad officiating kept hiding behind “we’re short on refs.”
I’d rather work harder beside fewer people who care than pad the roster with anyone who treats matches like a paycheck. A shortage is not a free pass for arrogance or incompetence.

Write-on cards I actually use
After a lot of tinkering I landed on reusable cards that fit my habits — about $5 in laminator supplies. Matte + pencil/marker, wipe with alcohol, reuse. If nearby refs want them, I might turn it into a tiny DIY service someday.
Matte / weatherproof
Great in rain — scratches eventually make cleaning harder.
Laminated + Sharpie
Rotate cards on tournament days. Retractable Sharpies only.
Heat-erasable
Winter favorite. Summer heat can mess with the ink.
For the biggest games I still go dumb-simple: golf pencil + a stack of 3×5 cards.
Side project
Countdown + elapsed on one glance
I wanted both clocks at once. Store apps didn’t cut it, so I’m building my own Apple Watch timer — half length, 1st/2nd half, even three-period formats like MLS NEXT U13. If it survives real matches, I may ship a free English version.
